Passage · Matthew 16:13–20
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
They answered with what they’d heard: “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
Then Jesus asked them the question that mattered: “But who do you say I am?”
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by My Father in heaven.”
“But who do you say I am?”
Devotional
Jesus didn't begin with the crowd. He began with His disciples. "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" They answered with rumors, titles, guesses. Then Jesus turned the question— quietly, directly: "But who do you say I am?"
This is the most important question Jesus ever asked. Not because He needed the answer— but because we do. It reveals how we see Him. Peter said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." And Jesus didn't say, "Good job." He said, "My Father showed you."
Jesus wasn't guessing. He knew the Father was stirring Peter. He asked— not to test, but to draw it out. Not information about Jesus— revelation from the Father.
This question still comes— quiet, piercing, relentless. Not once. Not long ago. But now. Again. Today:
Who do you say I am?

Where do I honestly stand when Jesus asks, “Who do you say I am?”
What This Means to Me
This question
isn't just for Peter.
It's for me.
When I see Jesus clearly,
something shifts.
My steps change.
My trust deepens.
My life begins to echo
the One I've seen.
Confession
isn't a one-time event.
I keep answering it.
The crowd said John the Baptist,
Elijah,
a prophet.
I say, "You are the Christ."
And tomorrow
I'll be tempted to answer like the crowd —
by what I can see,
by what feels safer.
But the Father's voice still speaks.
And every time I hear Him,
I get to answer again.
Not on a mountain.
Not in front of witnesses.
Just me,
in the room,
with Jesus asking.

Prayer
Father, Your Son is asking me: "Who do you say I am?"
I confess: Jesus is the Christ, Your Son, the One You sent to save.
He is the Word made flesh, the Lamb who was slain, the risen Lord who reigns.
He is the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, the Good Shepherd, the Resurrection and the Life, the Way, the Truth, and the Life, the True Vine.
He is the Cornerstone, the Alpha and the Omega, the Faithful and True Witness, the Lion of Judah, the Bridegroom, the Son of Man.
He is the Holy One of God, the Radiance of Your glory, the Heir of all things.
He is the Rock, the High Priest, the Advocate, the Deliverer, the Prince of Peace.
He is the Servant King— exalted above every name.
I declare this in Jesus' name. Amen.
