The Moment the Disciples Finally Saw Their Future

"Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me." (Matt 28:10) Jesus told His disciples to meet Him on a mountain in Galilee, north of the Sea of Galilee, the home of His ministry. He had appeared to them numerous times. He had eaten with them. Spoken with them. Even worked a miracle for them. But one thing was still missing: His commission. His strategy. Their role in it. They weren't just waiting for instructions. They were waiting for purpose- for the moment the resurrection finally explained their future. And then it came. The risen Jesus stood before them on the mountain and began with a declaration, not a command: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me." (Matt 28) He started with His authority because the mission ahead- "making disciples of all nations," was filled with unknown danger- the kind that comes with stepping into a world they had never entered before. Because what Jesus said next wasn't new. It was ancient. The Son of Man in Daniel's vision approached the Ancient of Days and received dominion, glory, and a kingdom so all peoples would serve Him. (Dan 7) And the story of Babel was beginning to run in reverse- the scattered nations starting to come home under the authority of the risen King. (Gen 11) The promise of Isaiah- light rising in "Galilee of the nations"- was unfolding before their eyes. (Isa 9) But authority alone wasn't enough. They needed more than a reason. They needed a presence. So before He sent them, He anchored them: "I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (Matt 28) This is why they could go. This is why they could obey. This is why the mission was possible. You may not know this about Jesus: He gave the Great Commission in the very place Isaiah said the light would rise, the place where His kingdom first broke in, the place where the nations would begin to come home. His authority sends them. His presence sustains them.
