He Doesn’t Just Give You a Mission — He Gives You Himself

Before I knew Jesus,
I believed God was real
but unreachable.
So nothing mattered.
After I met Jesus,
I knew God was real
and knowable.
So nothing else mattered.

My life was so radically changed
by Christ
that knowing Him better —
and helping others know Him —
became the driving purpose
of my life.

That mission propelled me forward:
to seminary,
to discipling,
to preaching,
to teaching,
to writing.

But sometimes,
my sense of purpose
runs out of steam.
Momentum fades.
Vision blurs.

And I find myself stalled —
just going through the motions
without seeking
His presence and voice.

When that happens,
I go from
living on purpose
to living without one.

I no longer focus
all my thoughts, words, and actions
on a singular mission.
I merely do the job.

I become like the bricklayer
who, when asked what he was doing,
said, "Building a wall."

But I want to be like the one
who answered,
"I'm building a cathedral —
one stone,
one prayer,
one soul at a time."

That's why I often return
to the words
Jesus spoke
on a mountain in Galilee:

"All authority
has been given to me
in heaven and on earth.
Go therefore
and make disciples
of all nations,
baptizing them
in the name of the Father
and the Son
and the Holy Spirit,
teaching them
to observe all
that I have commanded you.
And remember,
I am with you always,
even to the very end
of the age."
(Matthew 28:18–20)

This isn't just a job description.
It's a promise.

Jesus doesn't just send me —
He stays with me.
He doesn't just give me a task —
He gives me Himself.

That's what rescues me —
not the calling,
but the communion.

So when research feels tedious,
when writing feels dry,
when the mission feels distant,
I remember:
I'm not just writing a book,
a post, or a sermon.
I'm seeking to know God better —
and helping others
do the same.

And I'm building a cathedral.
One word.
One post.
One reader at a time.

Not just because
God gave me work —
but because
He gave me Himself.

And that changes everything.
