Jesus Asked Isaiah, “Whom Shall I Send?”

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” Isaiah 6:8 You may not know this about Jesus— He is the One who asked Isaiah that question. Isaiah saw the Lord high and exalted, seated on the throne, surrounded by holy worship. And the New Testament reveals the mystery: “Isaiah said these things because he saw His glory and spoke of Him.” John 12:41 Isaiah saw Jesus’ glory. Isaiah heard Jesus’ voice. Isaiah was sent by the pre incarnate Christ. The Sender in the temple is the Sender in the Gospels. The One who called Isaiah is the One who sends His disciples. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” John 20:21 The same Jesus who asked Isaiah, “Whom shall I send?” is still asking His people today. The mission didn’t begin with the disciples. It didn’t begin at Pentecost. It began with Jesus— the eternal Son, the risen Lord, directing His people through the Spirit He promised. The Spirit doesn’t create the mission. Jesus does. The Spirit doesn’t choose the witnesses. Jesus does. The Spirit empowers what Jesus commands. What He began in Isaiah’s day, He continued in Galilee. What He spoke in the Upper Room, He fulfilled through the Spirit. What He promised before the Ascension, He carries out in us today. Pentecost wasn’t the disciples finding their courage. It was Jesus— the same Jesus Isaiah saw— sending His people with His power, into His world, through His Spirit. Reflection Question: Jesus is still asking, “Whom shall I send?” How is Jesus—the One Isaiah saw— sending me today, and how is the Spirit equipping me for what He sends me to do? What This Means to Me: Pentecost reminds me that Jesus has always been the One who sends— from Isaiah’s vision to the Upper Room to my own life today. My part is simply to respond to the One who sends— trusting His Spirit to supply the strength. Prayer: Father, thank You for sending Your Spirit to empower the mission of Jesus. Give me the grace and courage to say, “Here am I Lord, send me.” I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
