The Secret of Jesus’ Power—and Ours

“The Son can do nothing by Himself; He can do only what He sees His Father doing.” — John 5:19 Many people think Jesus lived His earthly life with a kind of power we could never touch— moving through the world with power unavailable to us. But Scripture tells a different story. You may not know this about Jesus— He lived in the power of the Holy Spirit (Luke 4:1,14) at the direction of the Father. “The Son can do nothing by Himself; He can do only what He sees His Father doing” (John 5:19). “The Father tells Me what to say” (John 12:49–50). He never stopped being God, but He laid aside the exercise of His divine attributes (Phil. 2:6–7). He lived as a man in communion with the Father— “I always do what pleases Him” (John 8:29). His miracles were done in the Spirit’s power. “I cast out demons by the Spirit of God” (Matt. 12:28). “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power” (Acts 10:38). Every miracle— multiplying bread, walking on water, calming storms— was done in the Spirit’s power, not by switching into deity mode. The disciples failed with the demonized boy because they acted without dependence. “Because of your unbelief” (Matthew 17:20). “This kind comes out only by prayer and fasting” (Mark 9:29, KJV). Fasting increases power by increasing surrender. It sharpens hearing. It brings the soul into alignment with the Father. They were not depending on the Father. Not listening. Not aligning. We do have Jesus’ authority— “I give you authority… over all the power of the enemy” (Luke 10:19). But we do not have His sinless clarity. And within the limits of sin and indifference, we fail to experience the power that is ours. The Spirit’s power flows through communion, not presumption. Jesus didn’t act at His will. He acted at the Father’s will (John 5:19), in the Spirit’s power (Acts 10:38). So can we. For the power we seek is waiting in the communion we skip. Pentecost gives us the Spirit who empowered Jesus— the same Spirit (Rom. 8:11), the same power, the same Helper. And the more we walk in communion with the Father, the more we experience His power through the Holy Spirit.
