The Fourth Most Important Question Jesus Asked

"Why are you so afraid?" - Mark 4:40

Before the storm,
the disciples had seen Jesus heal the sick,
cast out demons,
and multiply food.

They had watched supernatural power flow through Him-
over bodies,
spirits,
and hunger itself.

Then came the storm.

Jesus was asleep in the boat.
Waves crashed-battering rams pounding the hull.
Panic surged.
The disciples woke Him with a desperate cry:
"Don't you care if we drown?"

Jesus stood,
rebuked the wind,
and calmed the waves.

The wind obeyed.
The waves bowed.
Jesus had halted the wind
and calmed the sea,
but the storm within them still raged.

Fear isn't just an emotion-
it's a belief.
A theology under pressure.
It reveals what we think about God
when everything shakes.

Jesus asks,
"Why are you so afraid?"
not to shame you,
but to stir you.
To awaken what you've forgotten.
To remind you who's in the boat.

You may not know this about Jesus:
He doesn't just calm storms-
He questions fear.

That's what makes
"Why are you so afraid?"
the fourth most important question Jesus asked.

Because it doesn't just expose emotion-
it reveals belief.

It names the silent storm inside us,
the theology we carry
when everything shakes.

Jesus doesn't just display power-
He invites trust.

Not just in who He is,
but in where He is-
right beside us,
even when the waves rise-
dark shadows in our mind.
