Jesus Really Was a Refugee

"take the child and His mother and escape to Egypt." (Matthew 2:13)

"Get up," the angel said, "take the child and His mother and escape to Egypt." Matthew 2:13

Jesus was a refugee.
Not metaphorically.
Not symbolically.
He fled danger.
He crossed borders.
He was pursued while just a child-
a candle carried through wind,
fragile yet protected by unseen hands.

At two years of age, He could walk.
He could speak.
But He could not choose.
He went where His parents led.

Danger did not just threaten them-
it pressed in,
a wolf in the shadows,
circling the fold.

But it was not danger that sent them into the night.
It was the Father.
Because of the threat, He warned them.
Because of the warning, they ran.
And because of His mercy, they arrived.

In that flight, prophecy was fulfilled:
"Out of Egypt I called My Son." (Hosea 11:1; Matthew 2:15)
Threads woven into a tapestry.

Not mere escape-
divine providence.
Exile was not accident-
it was design.
Even in Egypt the Father guided Him.

And you may not know this about Jesus:
The Child the Father carried through a night of danger
now shows you the God who carries us through the nights we cannot see.

As the new year begins, this truth steadies us.
Because the Father carried His Son into a future He could not choose,
that same faithful Father will carry us into a year we cannot yet see-
leading us through unforeseen nights,
protecting us from hidden threats,
guiding our steps when we cannot see the path.
Prayer

Father, thank You for seeing what I cannot.
For warning, for guiding,
for carrying me when I did not know I needed it.
As this new year begins,
help me trust You when I face uncertainty,
and rest in the truth
that You will carry me through what I can't see.
