How to Live a Life Without Regret

Solomon said, “The day of one’s death is better than the day of one’s birth" (Ecclesiastes 7:1). Hard to believe a man of wisdom wrote those words. They seem wrong. And yet, upon reflection they make sense. How so? Consider that on the day of birth life buds like a flower, promising only beauty.  No mention is made of the sun and its wilting heat.  The dreamy optimism of birth denies the reality of life’s disappointments and pain.

In sharp contrast, on the day a loved one dies we contemplate the meaning of life and the hereafter.  We reflect on our own mortality and ask, "If I died today, would I feel good about my life?  Have I lived it for those who will cry at my funeral? Or, have I lived it for those who don't care?” 

I don’t mean to cast a shadow over your day.  But pause and think think deeply about life’s meaning.  And ask God for the grace needed to live each day for him and for those who love you.  Ultimately, a life lived like that, will be a life without regret.
