He Didn’t Say Anything About the Waiting

As told in John 5:1–15,
the man at the pool of Bethesda
had been there thirty-eight years.
Not just waiting
but watching others step into healing
while he stayed behind.

When Jesus finally approached him,
He didn't touch the water.
He didn't carry him to the pool
and place him in.
He just asked,
"Do you want to be well?"
(John 5:6)

There was no condemnation
in the question —
just the ache of proximity.
The kind that comes
when mercy stands close,
but lets the silence linger.

The man answered with logic:
"Sir, I have no one
to help me into the pool
when the water is stirred.
While I am trying to get in,
someone else
goes down ahead of me."
(John 5:7)

His words carried years
of disappointment —
reasoning shaped
by unmet hope.

Jesus didn't engage
the man's explanation.
He didn't offer words
of sympathy
or condemn the injustice
of the system.
He simply said:
"Get up!
Pick up your mat and walk."
(John 5:8)

The man got up.
Picked up his mat.
Walked. (John 5:9)

No ritual.
No angel.
No water.
Just a word
that cut through the years
of delay.

He answered tradition
with transformation.
He didn't just heal
the body's paralysis —
but the soul's.
He restored forgotten dreams.

And in picking up his mat
and walking,
he carried untold stories.
Not just of paralysis —
but of being passed over.
Unseen.
Unheard.
Abandoned.
Of wondering
what he did
to deserve suffering
so long
without rescue.

You may not know this about Jesus:
He didn't explain the waiting.
He stepped into it.

He speaks healing
not just to pain —
but to the dream beneath it.
The part you thought
He'd forgotten.

But first,
He asks the question
that wakes it all:
"Do you want to be well?"
