He Calls You to Sit at His Feet

It began with a meal and a moment —
but turned into a lasting memory.

Jesus arrived in Bethany,
welcomed by two sisters.
Martha moved to the kitchen,
preparing a meal
with loving care.
Mary crossed a cultural line —
she sat where only men sat.
She took her place
at the feet of her rabbi.

She risked disapproval —
from her sister,
from the disciples,
maybe even from Jesus.
But it was easy.
Because the Lord was near.

She wasn't resisting responsibility.
She was responding to nearness.
Stillness wasn't her excuse
to avoid work.
It was her courage
to stay present.

But Martha flinched.
Overwhelmed by the weight
of preparation,
she saw Mary sitting —
doing nothing.
Couldn't Mary see the food
yet to be prepped, cooked, and served?

So she called for Jesus
to make it fair.
"Lord, don't you care
that my sister has left me
to do the work by myself?"
(Luke 10:40)

Jesus didn't rebuke her.
He restored her.

"Martha, Martha,
you're greatly distressed
and worried about many things.
But only a few things are needed.
Indeed, only one is necessary.
And Mary has chosen
the best portion,
and it won't be taken from her."
(Luke 10:41–42)

Mary didn't just listen.
She belonged.

And Jesus stood guard
over her place at His feet.

This wasn't just
about spiritual priorities.
It was about
spiritual permission.

You may not know this about Jesus:
He doesn't just call you to serve —
but to sit at His feet.
In fact,
He guards your right to be there,
even during chaos.
