Where to Find Jesus

"Did not our hearts burn within us
as He spoke to us on the road,
as He opened the Scriptures to us?" Lu 24:32

The road to Emmaus carried a strange quiet,
as if Jerusalem's grief
had followed them into the hills.

Seven miles lay ahead of them.

Cleopas walked beside his wife, Mary-
the same Mary who had stood near the cross,
close enough to hear Him cry,
"My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"
Ps 22:1; Mt 27:46

They had seen the sky go dark.
They had felt the earth shake.
They had heard the reports-
the torn curtain,
the opened tombs,
and the women of their group
saying they had seen angels
who said He was alive. Lu 24:22-23

Alive.

But nothing held together,
so they walked toward Emmaus,
trying to understand a world
that no longer made sense.

They didn't notice the Stranger
until He matched their pace.
He asked what sorrow
had settled so deeply on them.

Cleopas answered slowly,
telling Him about the death,
the empty tomb,
the angels' words,
and a future they had buried.

"But we had hoped
that He was the one to redeem Israel." Lu 24:21

The Stranger listened.
Then He spoke-
from the Scriptures,
giving unexpected words of hope.

And beginning with Moses and the Prophets,
He showed them
that every ancient line
had always pointed here. Lu 24:27

"Was it not necessary
that the Christ should suffer these things
and enter into His glory?" Lu 24:26

And you may not know this about Jesus-
He opened their eyes to the Word
before He opened their eyes to Himself.
He wanted them to recognize Him
in Scripture
before they recognized Him
in the breaking of the bread.

When they reached Emmaus,
they urged Him to stay.
He entered their home.
He sat at their table.
He took the bread,
blessed it,
broke it,
and gave it to them. Lu 24:30

And their eyes opened.
And He vanished from their sight. Lu 24:31
