Jesus Claimed God's Name

"Before Abraham was, I AM." (John 8:58)

Some ask where Jesus explicitly claimed to be God.
They insist He never made such a claim.
But the people who heard Him-
the Pharisees trained in the Scriptures-
knew exactly what He claimed.

While debating the Pharisees, Jesus first exposed their identity:
"If God were your Father, you would love Me." (John 8:42)
Then He revealed their spiritual lineage:
"You are of your father the devil." (John 8:44)

Next He acknowledged their physical lineage, but with shocking words:
"Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day,
and he saw it and was glad." (John 8:56)

The Pharisees ridiculed Him:
"You are not yet fifty years old,
and have You seen Abraham?" (John 8:57)

Their words expressed reason.
Logic.
To them-His age exposed His error.
They thought they had Him cornered.

Then Jesus unveiled His true identity:
"Before Abraham was, I AM." (John 8:58)

Not "I was."
Not "I existed."
But "I AM"-the name God gave Moses in Exodus 3:14.
The covenant name Jews would not speak.
To claim that name for oneself was blasphemy.
But Jesus didn't just say the name-
He owned it.

And the Pharisees' reaction revealed His meaning.
That's why they picked up stones to kill Him (John 8:59).
Not because He was unclear.
But because He claimed the identity of God Himself.

Jesus didn't hint at divinity-He invoked God's personal name.
Their reaction-not modern reinterpretation-
remains the clearest evidence of His direct claim to deity,
spoken in the language, culture, and Scriptures they knew by heart.

When Jesus reveals His true identity, do I bow-or argue?

Jesus is not a figure I evaluate.
He is the eternal I AM who evaluates me.
His words demand surrender, not admiration.

Lord Jesus, open my eyes to see You as You truly are-
the eternal I AM, the One before Abraham,
the One who speaks truth that divides and saves.
Give me courage to stand firm when others deny Your identity,
and help me reflect Your truth with clarity and love.

Why Are You Afraid

If You're with me in the waters,
then I'm safe within Your hold-
for no storm can break this vessel
when Your presence guards my soul.

"Why are you afraid?"

Your voice cuts through the chaos
and calls my fear by name.

Then Your presence meets my chaos,
every fear begins to fold.
You hush what howls within me,
and You calm the storm I hold.

You speak and winds fall silent,
and the waves refuse to rise-
but my heart still shakes with fear,
'cause the storm inside is near.

If the wind obeys Your order,
and the waves obey Your word,
why does fear still rise within me,
when I know that You are near.

If You're with me in the waters,
then I'm safe within Your hold-
for no storm can break this vessel
when Your presence guards my soul.
